Frequently asked questions about WHOIS lookup
WHOIS is the public record of who registered a domain name and when. It shows the registrar, the registration and expiry dates, the domain status and the name servers. Contact details of individual owners are usually hidden by privacy protection.
A WHOIS lookup searches that public record for one domain. Type a domain into the search box on this page and we query the registry using RDAP, the modern, structured version of WHOIS, and show the results in a readable format.
Dates, status and name servers come straight from the registry and are current. Owner details depend on what the registrant provided and whether privacy protection is switched on, so they are often redacted or replaced with the privacy service's details.
They are standard EPP status codes set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited is a normal transfer lock that protects the domain from being stolen; clientHold or serverHold means the domain has been taken offline; redemptionPeriod and pendingDelete mean it has expired. Our lookup explains each code in plain English.
Yes. You can look up as many domains as you like, with no account and no sign-up.
Not directly, but our lookup also finds the IP address the domain points to and the network that owns that IP, which is usually the hosting company or a CDN such as Cloudflare.
Most generic endings (.com, .net, .org, .ai, .xyz and hundreds more) and many country endings publish RDAP data. A few country registries only offer their own WHOIS service; for those, check the registry's website directly.
Check the expiry date: some owners let domains lapse. Meanwhile, try another ending such as .co, .net or .io, or a small change to the name, using our domain search. If you want to buy it, the contact option in the WHOIS record or a domain broker is the usual way to reach the owner.
